asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received on the cuts to be introduced in the financing of universities.

Mr. Waldegrave:

Ministers have received about 2,000 letters about the financing of the universities since the announcement of the allocation of recurrent grant on 2 July. Over half of these concerned universities that were formerly colleges of applied technology.
