1979–80 100
1980–81 170

Unemployment Statistics

Mr. Thomas Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what is the present number of (a) men and (b) women now unemployed in the London borough of Wandsworth;

(2) what is the number of (a) men, and (b) women under the age of 21 years now unemployed in the London borough of Wandsworth.

Mr. Peter Morrison:

At 8 October there were 9,929 males and 3,935 females registered as unemployed in the area covered by the Clapham Junction and Tooting employment offices, which closely corresponds to the London borough of Wandsworth. The numbers of young people under 20 years of age included in these figures were 1,882 males and 1,310 females. Information for the precise age range specified is not available.

Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list, for each travel-to-work area in Great Britain, the percentage and total numbers for each area, of those registered as unemployed who are (a) out of work for four weeks or less and (b) aged over 55 years and voluntarily retired.

Mr. Peter Morrison:

The unemployment statistics do not distinguish voluntarily retired people. The following table gives for each region the provisional numbers of people who, at 8 October, had been unemployed for up to four weeks and for 9 July, the latest date for which an age analysis is available, the numbers unemployed aged 55 years and over. In each case the numbers are expressed as percentages of the total unemployed. The information could be provided for each travel-to-work area only at disproportionate cost.
