Mr. Knox asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prosecutions have been brought to date under the Race Relations Act 1976; and how many of these have been successful.

Mr. Raison:

I understand from my right hon. and learned Friend the Attorney-General, whose consent is required for such prosecutions, that since the Act came into force in June 1977 there have been 25 prosecutions for incitement to racial hatred and conspiracy to incite racial hatred; of these, 15 have resulted in convictions and four have not yet been completed.
