HC Deb 26 October 1981 vol 10 c265W

Mr. Farr asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many towns categorised as ancient and historic were originally included in the list carried by his Department as needing bypassing; and how many on that list have now been bypassed or are in the course of being bypassed.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke:

My right hon. Friend the Member for Worcester (Mr. Walker), then Secretary of State for the Environment, announced in June 1971 that it was hoped to relieve 84 historic towns of trunk road traffic by the early 1980s; 58 of these have so far been wholly or partially bypassed. Bypasses for two more are under construction.
