Mr. Hardy asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is his role in the appointment of members to the board of the British Steel Corporation.

Mr. Norman Lamont:

My right hon. Friend's role in the appointment of members to the BSC is laid down in section 1 of the Iron and Steel Act 1975, which provides that all appointments are made by the Secretary of State. This section includes a requirement that the appointment of a member of the corporation, other than the chairman, shall not be made by the Secretay of State except after consultation with the chairman.
