Mrs. Renée Short asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what progress has been made on revising the standing orders covering the administration of the prison service and prisoners' rules; what changes are being made; when they will be published; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mayhew:

The revision of the Prison Department standing order on prisoners' correspondence, visits and petitions is complete. The new order has been issued to staff and a copy is in the Library of the House. It will be published and an announcement of the changes will be made when it comes into force on 1 December 1981.
