HC Deb 22 October 1981 vol 10 c172W

21. Mr. Warren asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what were the reasons for the selection of an FM frequency for citizens band radio in the United Kingdom which is incompatible with other users in the world.

Mr. Raison:

Frequency modulation was chosen to minimise the interference caused to other users of radio, and the frequency sub-band selected as being the only one which could be made available quickly. As to the compatibility of the service with those authorised by other administrations, there is no single standard for CB radio but it will be our objective in the longer term to adopt the relevant specifications recommended by the Conference of European Postal and Telecommunications Administration.
