HC Deb 21 October 1981 vol 10 c145W

9. Mr. Bill Walker asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will discuss with the chairman of the British Railways Board investment in track and signalling equipment.

Mr. David Howell:

I shall be meeting the chairman shortly to discuss this question.

18. Mr. Moate asked the Secretary of State for Transport when he next expects to meet the chairman of British Railways to discuss railway productivity.

Mr. David Howell:

I have already met the chairman of the British Railways Board and we discussed a number of matters, including the urgent need to improve British Rail's productivity. Further discussions will take place from time to time, when I am sure this important issue will be raised.

21. Mr. Arthur Lewis asked the Secretary of State for Transport why he has reappointed Sir Peter Parker as chairman of British Rail at a salary of £60,000 per annum in view of the fact that this is an increase of 25 per cent. on his previous salary when the Government's declared policy is of a limit of 4 per cent. increases in salaries of public servants.

Mr. David Howell:

The 4 per cent. is an indication of the total amount the Government believe can be afforded on pay bills in the public services. In Sir Peter Parker's case, the issue was the terms on which his services could be secured for a further two year period, his five-year contract having ended.
