Mr. Thornton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give the total figures for local authority employment for each of the past 10 years showing separately the figures for (a) educational staff, (b) law and order staff and (c) direct labour organisations.

The following table sets out the available information for England and Wales. Employment in local authority direct labour organisations is not separately distinguished in the surveys.
