Mr. Thornton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give, for each of the last 10 years, for England and Wales, the figures of expenditure carried out by direct labour organisations and the proportion which this represents of similarly defined total expenditure of local authorities in each of those years.

Sir George Young:

Information is collected from local authorities for the first and third quarters only in respect of the value of their direct labour organisations' new construction and repair and maintenance work. The relevant quarterly figures for local authority DLOs in England and Wales for the last 10 years are in the following table.
