HC Deb 19 October 1981 vol 10 c27W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, during the last convenient period of one week or more, how many hours of prison staff time were devoted to the censorship of prisoners' correspondence at Birmingham prison.

Mr. Mayhew:

In a normal week, provision is made at Birmingham prison for approximately 300 man-hours to be spent on censorship duties and on the recording and processing of prisoners' incoming property and valuables.
