HC Deb 19 October 1981 vol 10 c16W
Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total cost of the special fraud teams operating in the Crewe area in 1981; and how much was saved by disallowing benefit to the claimants concerned.

Mr. Waddington

[pursuant to his reply, 31 July 1981, c. 714]The total cost of the special fraud team operating in the Crewe area in February and March 1981 was £7,585. The benefit disallowed totalled £602.63 per week.

It is impossible to estimate what further savings have been achieved as a result of the deterrent effect of the operation on those who might be minded to cheat.
