§ Mrs. Dunwoodyasked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total cost of the special fraud teams operating in the Crewe area in 1981; and how much was saved by disallowing benefit to the claimants concerned.
§ Mr. Waddington[pursuant to his reply, 31 July 1981, c. 714]The total cost of the special fraud team operating in the Crewe area in February and March 1981 was £7,585. The benefit disallowed totalled £602.63 per week.
It is impossible to estimate what further savings have been achieved as a result of the deterrent effect of the operation on those who might be minded to cheat.
