HC Deb 19 November 1981 vol 13 cc214-5W
Sir Frederick Burden

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the results of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation exercise "Ocean Safari" have been taken into account in his assessment of the relative requirements for naval vessels for the defence of sea lanes and for convoy escort duties; and whether he has reassessed the declared increased requirement of surface vessels for convoy duties for merchant ships.

Mr. Blaker

Full analysis of this exercise will not be completed until early next year. Its lessons will be taken into account in our planning.

Sir Frederick Burden

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the results of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation exercise "Ocean Safari" confirmed his assessment of the efficacy of SSN hunter-killer submarines against diesel-electric boats at present used by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; and whether the exercise gave any new indications of operating noise levels of the latter craft.

Mr. Blaker

Exercise "Ocean Safari" 81 did not include operations by nuclear-powered against diesel-electric submarines.
