asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish the salary range of vice-chancellors of universities and principals of polytechnics.

Directors of polytechnics maintained by local education authorities are paid in accordance with the Burnham scales applicable to the principals of colleges of further education. These range, in accordance with student numbers and the general level of academic work undertaken in any particular institution, between a minimum of £9,996 and a maximum of £21,234.
