HC Deb 30 June 1981 vol 7 cc366-7W
Mr. Tom Benyon

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when the reports on the 1981 census of population will be published.

Sir George Young

A preliminary report for England and Wales has been published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office today and a copy placed in the Library of the House. It gives provisional figures of the population present on the night of 5–6 April 1981 in each local authority area. I understand from my right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for Scotland, that the preliminary report for Scotland has also been placed in the Library and published today.

A further preliminary report on towns in England and Wales will be published in September 1981. Results from the main computer processing will follow: reports for each county of England and Wales and, I understand, for each region of Scotland, will be laid before Parliament successively from November 1981 until mid-1982, after which reports will be laid on particular census topics. All the main results are planned to be completed by 1984.
