HC Deb 18 June 1981 vol 6 c395W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if, in view of the fact that mail order companies are the principal outlet for low-priced imported consumer durables, he will now amend the Trade Descriptions (Origin Marking) Order to cover all advertisements of such imported products.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

No. As I made clear in Standing Committee on 1 April, I am satisfied that the practical problems involved would be out of all proportion to the consumer benefit achieved. It would in any case be incompatible with the whole object of the order to discriminate against imports in the way the hon. Member suggests.
