HC Deb 18 June 1981 vol 6 cc422-3W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what support his Department, or institutions associated with his Department, are prepared to give in the manufacture of medicines, vaccines and other preparations which are required in the treatment of patients suffering from certain diseases which are not available from any other source; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Vaughan

When the Department is alerted to a problem over the supply of essential medicines, vaccines or other preparations, everything possible is done to find a source of supply or to encourage the manufacture of the material. Costs reasonably incurred by a company which manufactures medicines, including research and development costs, are, where applicable, taken into account under the pharmaceutical price regulation scheme. If the hon. Member has a particular problem in mind I should be grateful if he would let me know.
