HC Deb 16 June 1981 vol 6 cc298-9W
Sir Bernard Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many convictions there have been for the purchase and consumption of intoxicating liquor by persons under 18 years of age for each of the past five years.

Mr. Mayhew

The information available is given in the following table; figures for 1980 are not yet available.

of the Metropolitan Police Act 1839 and the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, respectively, were made in each division of the Metropolitan Police area for each month in 1978, 1979 and 1980; how many arrests resulted for what offences; and what was the racial identity of those stopped and arrested.

Mr. Raison

[pursuant to his reply, 8 June 1981, c. 11]: I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that separate statistics are not available for stops under section 66 of the Metropolitan Police Act. The information currently available is given in the following tables; the figures are based on information recorded in station registers for operational purposes and as this form is unsuited to the preparation of statistical summaries the resultant figures may be subject to some error. Figures for 1980 of stops under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 are not yet available separately. Details of the racial appearance of persons stopped and the offences for which those subsequently arrested were suspected are not collected centrally on a regular basis nor are monthly figures readily available, and such information could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
