HC Deb 16 June 1981 vol 6 c335W
20. Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is satisfied with the availability of physics teachers; and whether he will make a statement.

Dr. Boyson

No, but we are making progress in contending with the shortage. Enrolments for postgraduate training for the teaching of physics in autumn 1980 were 76 per cent. higher than in 1979. The supply of newly qualified physics teachers this year and next should be sufficient to fill the existing vacancies, and to make some inroads into the shortages accumulated from the past.
