HC Deb 15 June 1981 vol 6 cc270-1W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what factors influenced his decision expressed in Cmnd. 8173, "Growing Older" page 24, that travel concessions should be a matter for local discretion.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

I have been asked to reply.

Concessionary fares have always been a matter for local discretion. The number of old people, the choice of other ways to help them and the availability of bus services can all vary greatly between areas.
