Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs in total are supported by the temporary short-time working compensation scheme for (a) each of the travel-to-work areas that comprise the county of Cumbria, (b) the Northern region and (c) the North-Western region, for the last month for which statistics are available; what percentage of the total insured working population in each area each figure represents; and if he will give the figure for the corresponding period of 1980.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment why he amended the rules relating to the second and subsequent applications for the temporary short-time working compensation scheme as from 1 April; and if he will reconsider the change in view of its effect on industries in the Penistone constituency where many hundreds of workers have lost their jobs as a result.
