asked the Secretary of State for Energy what are the latest annual figures available for United Kingdom output of deep-mined coal and the number of miners employed; what are the corresponding figures for 10, 20 and 30 years ago; and if he will make a statement.

In 1950 British collieries employed approximately 688,000 men and produced approximately 207 million tonnes of coal. In 1960 the figures were 588,000 and 189 million. In 1970, 285,000 and 137 million. In 1980, 229,000 and 112 million.
