HC Deb 31 July 1981 vol 9 c600W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what are the current levels of capital expenditure and the numbers of employees in the Post Office Corporation and the British Steel Corporation.

Mr. Michael Marshall

The approved levels of capital expenditure on fixed assets for the Post Office—postal business, British Telecommunications and National Girobank—and British Steel Corporation for the year 1981–82 are £2,097 million and £198 million respectively.

According to their annual reports there were 422,902 employees in the Post Office at 31 March 1980 and 120,900 in the BSC at 31 March 1981. The annual report for the Post Office for the year ended 31 March 1981 is not yet published but the number of employees is unlikely to be substantially different from that shown in the corporation's last report.
