HC Deb 31 July 1981 vol 9 c589W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in view of the continuing outflow of gipsies from Greater London into Hertfordshire and consequent illegal camping, he is satisfied with the provision of gipsy sites in the Greater London area; and whether the number of such sites is increasing or decreasing in number.

Mr. Monro

Whilst I have no evidence of an outflow of gipsies from Greater London, there is a need for additional gipsy caravan site provision in London. Since this is a local authority responsibility, I have been seeking for some time a meeting with the London Boroughs Association to consider what further provision is necessary. There were 23 authorised gipsy sites in Greater London on 1 January 1980 and this same number was recorded on 1 January 1981.
