HC Deb 31 July 1981 vol 9 c647W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will abandon plans for the Full Sutton prison in favour of devoting resources to urban prison building.

Mr. Mayhew

No.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what consideration he gave when reaching his decision to build a dispersal prison capable of taking category A prisoners in a remote place like Full Sutton to the fact that places for category A prisoners in the existing dispersal prisons are unoccupied.

Mr. Mayhew

Only a small proportion of the population of dispersal prisons is in category A, most places being occupied by category B prisoners. There is no fixed number of places for category A prisoners and it therefore cannot be said that there are unoccupied places for category A prisoners.
