HC Deb 31 July 1981 vol 9 c647W
Dr. Edmund Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the present position in respect of the use of emergency prison accommodation for offenders convicted as a result of incidents during recent disturbances in inner city areas.

Mr. Whitelaw

In order to relieve the pressure on prison department accommodation, I have declared the Ministry of Defence camps at Rollestone, Wiltshire, and at Beckingham, Lincolnshire, to be prisons under section 33 of the Prison Act 1952. They will together be suitable for about 730 prisoners in security category C. These additional places will release accommodation in ordinary prison department establishments for offenders given custodial sentences as a result of recent disturbances.
