asked the Secretary of State for Transport what recommendations his Department has given to local authorities about the replacement of signposts with the traditional arms.

There is no need to replace any of these signposts until they are in need of repair or replacement. At that stage we recommend retention of these signposts, wherever possible, on roads in rural areas with light traffic and low speeds.
