HC Deb 30 July 1981 vol 9 cc528-9W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of motorway are due to be (a) started and (b) completed in 1981.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

In England 45 miles of motorway should have been started by the end of the year, including 2.6 miles of local authority motorway for which 100 per cent. grant is being provided by my Department. In addition, advanced works are starting on two schemes for which the main works, totalling eight miles should start in 1982. Thirty-six miles are expected to open during 1981, including one mile of 100 per cent. grant-aided motorway.
