HC Deb 30 July 1981 vol 9 c472W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what is the annual cost to public funds of the broadcasting of parliamentary proceedings.

Mr. Pym

For the financial year 1980–81 expenditure incurred by the Department of the Environment on the sound broadcasting of parliarnentary proceedings totalled £43,520. In addition, the cost of the transcription of evidence and the fees and expenses of specialist advisers to the Select Committee on Sound Broadcasting totalled £1,166. That Committee also has the part-time services of one Clerk and one personal secretary. The parliamentary sound archives are staffed by three full-time members and one part-time member of the House of Lords Record Office, all of whom have general duties in that office in addition to their work on the archives. Details of the costs borne by the broadcasters are matters for them.
