HC Deb 13 July 1981 vol 8 c303W
28. Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what account is taken of benefits to tourism when assessing policy towards support for the arts.

Mr. Channon

I am sure that our reputation in the arts and the excellence of our museums and galleries are one of our major assets in attracting tourists.

30. Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what estimate he has made of how much local authorities spent on supporting the Arts in 1980.

Mr. Channon

My Ministerial responsibility covers only museum; and galleries, on which the proposed expenditure for 1980–81 was £36.4 million—at November 1979 prices. Local authority expenditure on other cultural activities, including theatres, concerts and so on was £42.4 million.
