Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give, at the latest and most convenient stated date, the numbers of peers of the realm who hold any appointment sponsored by his Department; what situation or appointment each one holds; how many hours per week are given to the work connected with it; what are the salaries or expenses paid; and how the latter figures compare with May 1979.

The total number of peers holding such appointments is 28. Since the reply which I gave to the hon. Member on 16 December 1980—[Vol. 996, c.159–60]—there have been the following changes:

New appointments

  • Lord Brassey—Member of the Board of visitors for Gartree Prison.
  • Baroness Pike—Chairman of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission (£l3,392—3 days a week).

Appointments lapsed

  • Baroness Pike—Chairman of the Women's Royal Voluntary Service.
  • Lord Plowden—Chairman of the Police Complaints Board.

Changes in appointment, title or salary level

  • Lord Allen of Abbeydale—Chairman of the Gaming Board for Great Britain.
  • Lord Harris of Greenwich—Chairman of the Parole Board (£15,788—4 days a week).
  • Baroness Lockwood—Chairman of the Equal Opportunities Commission (£22,320—full-time).
  • Lord Plummer of St. Marylebone—Chairman of the Horserace Betting Levy Board (£13,392—3 days a week).
  • Lord Thomson of Monifieth—Chairman of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (£20,380—4 days a week).
  • The Duke of Devonshire—Member of the Horserace Totalisator Board (£3,350—1 day a week).
  • Lord Allen of Fallowfield—Governor of the British Broadcasting Corporation (£2,675—1 day a week).
  • Baroness Serota—Governor of the British Broadcasting Corporation (£2,675—1 day a week).

The other information requested by the hon. Member is not held centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
