HC Deb 13 July 1981 vol 8 c306W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his policy towards the relative priority to be given to (a) engineering, (b) pure science and (c) applied science courses in universities and polytechnics following the allocation decisions of the University Grants Committee.

Dr. Boyson

My right hon. and learned Friend welcomes the emphasis that the University Grants Committee has given to science, engineering and technology in deciding its allocations of recurrent grant to the universities for 1981–82. This was explained in the letter from the chairman of the UGC to all universities quoted in the reply my right hon. and learned Friend gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Wokingham (Sir W. van Straubenzee) on 2 July 1981.
