HC Deb 01 July 1981 vol 7 cc418-9W
52. Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what arrangements his Department makes to assess the likely effect on traffic flows of each major item of motorway maintenance.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Particular care is taken when planning motorway repairs to ensure that traffic flows are affected as little as possible. We consult local authorities and the police to find the safest method of directing traffic through the site. The Department continues to search for ways of reducing disruption by phasing major repair programmes, making maximum use of night and weekend working when traffic is lightest, improving the design of lane diversions and increasing the amount of information given to drivers both on the road and through the media.
