HC Deb 26 January 1981 vol 997 cc335-6W
Mr. Cockeram

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many staff are employed by Telford new town in disposing of its properties; and if he is satisfied with the rate of disposals.

Mr. Stanley

I assume my hon. Friend is referring to sales of corporation houses. Telford has 10 staff engaged on this work and I am satisfied with progress. Since May 1979, 1,488 sales of Telford corporation dwellings have been completed or are under firm negotiation, representing 15–77 per cent. of corporation tenancies at June 1979. This is the highest percentage of dwellings sold or being sold in any new town over this period.

Mr. Cockeram

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the population of Telford New Town on 31 March 1979 and 31 March 1980, respectively, and the estimated population at the most recent available date.

Mr. Stanley

The Telford Development Corporation's latest estimates of its population at 31 March 1979 is 101,400 and at 31 March 1980 is 103,200. No later estimate has been made.
