Mr. Harry Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many merit awards were made to consultants in hospitals in Scotland during 1980; and what was the total amount of these new awards.

Mr. Fairgrieve

Awards are reallocated following deaths and retirals and in 1980 99 consultants in hospitals in Scotland received new or upgraded awards as a result of reallocation. As there were no additional awards for Scotland, no additional cost to the NHS was involved.
