HC Deb 16 January 1981 vol 996 c629W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the members of the Race Relations Board as of 31 December 1980; what their salaries were in 1980; how many people are employed by the Race Relations Board; and what was the total cost to public funds of the Race Relations Board in 1980.

Mr. Raison

The Race Relations Board was abolished when the Commission for Racial Equality was set up in June 1977.

The commission's members are:

  • Mr. David Lane (Chairman)
  • Mr. Clifton Robinson (Deputy Chairman)
  • Mr. Brian Ashley
  • Ms. Lulu Banu
  • Mrs. Juliet Cheetham
  • Mr. Frank Cummins
  • Mrs. Shreela Flather
  • Dr. Farrukh Hashmi
  • Mr. Malcolm Lee
  • Mr. Dilbagh Singh Mavi
  • Mr. William Morris
  • Mrs. Gertrude Paul
  • Mr. Robert Ramsey
  • Mr. Alan Wilson

The chairman and the deputy chairman receive an annual salary of £23,105 and £16,535 respectively. Other members of the commission, who are appointed on a part-time basis, are paid fees—currently £50 a day—plus reasonable expenses for their attendance at commission meetings.

I understand that on 31 December 1980 the commission employed 218 staff. The estimated total cost of the commission to public funds in the 1980–81 financial year is £7.036 million.
