HC Deb 15 January 1981 vol 996 c595W
Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what representations he has received against the provision of regional development grants and selective assistance towards the cost of a South Wales factory of Showa Denko Ltd., which will result in reduplication of existing spare capacity in the television components market; and what reply he has sent.

Mr. MacGregor

My Department has received representations from six United Kingdom companies and the British Plastics Federation following reports of possible investment by this company in South Wales, and is fully aware of the United Kingdom companies' concern.

The companies have been informed that all manufacturing companies such as this one—whether British or foreign—are automatically eligible to receive regional development grants towards the cost of building work and plant and machinery in the special development and development areas. Selective financial assistance for such a project has not been discussed; all applications are considered individually against the relevant criteria.
