HC Deb 15 January 1981 vol 996 c590W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many homes have been started by the housing associations for each of the past five years; and how many will be started in 1980.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The number of newly built homes started by housing associations in England in the period 1975–1979 was as follows:

1975 18,800
1976 27,450
1977 26,350
1978 17,950
1979 13,900

11,400 were started in the first 11 months of 1980.

Housing associations also rehabilitate existing dwellings. Figures for starts for these dwellings are not available.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the number of new housing association schemes that will be allowed to be started between now and April 1981.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The number of housing association schemes started in the first quarter of 1981 will be affected by the restrictions designed to prevent overspending by the Housing Corporation and local authorities. A number of schemes will, however, be started as a result of tenders already approved, and the Housing Corporation will be giving a limited number of fresh approvals during the quarter.
