HC Deb 14 January 1981 vol 996 c529W
Mr. Tilley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies who owe their citizenship to their connection with a former dependency live in Malaysia; how many live elsewhere and in which other countries; and how many also have citizenship of those countries.

Mr. Blaker:

I have been asked to reply.

It is not possible to give precise figures, but estimates made by our posts overseas areof some 1.5 million such citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies. Of these, about 1.4 million are resident in Malaysia; almost 1.3 million are additionally citizens of Malaysia. Estimated figures—including dependants who may not themselves be citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies—of those living in the following countries are:

Kenya 17,000
Tanzania 9,000
Malawi 4,600
Zambia 5,000
India 39,000
Singapore 3,500
Zimbabwe 1,000

There are also small numbers of others elsewhere. Apart from those in Malaysia, few are thought to have another citizenship.

For further details I refer the hon. Member to paragraphs 9 and 10 of appendix B of the White Paper "British Nationality Law"—Cmnd. 7987.
