HC Deb 13 January 1981 vol 996 cc492-3W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the latest figure for unemployment; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

At 11 December, the number of people registered as unemployed in the United Kingdom was 2,244,229. The figure is regrettably high and seasonal factors are bound to bring a further sharp increase this month. Despite this, there are a number of encouraging signs for the future. Inflation is coming down and there is undoubtedly a realisation that we must make ourselves more efficient and competitive to create future jobs.
