asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take steps to phase out mixed ability classes in secondary schools.

It is for head teachers, school governors and local education authorities to decide how school teaching groups should be organised. My right hon. and learned Friend believes mixed ability teaching in secondary schools should in general be discouraged.
