HC Deb 13 January 1981 vol 996 c492W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the numbers of unemployed young people under 21 years of age in the Middleton and Prestwich constituency area at the most recent date; and how many of them are on special Government support schemes.

Mr. Peter Morrison

At 9 October 1980, the latest date for which the quartely age analysis is available, 1,012 young people under 20 years of age and 1,399 aged 20 to 24 years were registered as unemployed in the area covered by the Middleton, Prestwich and Radcliffe employment offices which corresponds closely with the Middleton and Prestwich constituency. Information for the precise age range specified is not available.

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that between 1 April 1980 and 30 November 1980 some 570 young people in the local authority district of Bury, which covers much of the constituency, have entered the youth opportunities programme. Information is not available for the precise area requested. The numbers registered as unemployed do not include those undergoing training under the youth opportunities programme.
