Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what is the total number of people who leave the unemployment register each month;

(2) how many married women leave the unemployment register each month,

The average number of people in Great Britain leaving the unemployment register each month in the three months ending November was 272,000—standardised to a 41/3 week month and seasonally adjusted. The figure is for employment offices only and thus excludes registrants at careers offices and professional and executive recruitment offices. Employment offices cover about 90 per cent. of the unemployed excluding school leavers.

Within the above figure 98,000 were women, but separate figures for married women are not available.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) how many people are taken off the unemployment register each month due to death;

(2) how many people are taken off the unemployment register each month because they reach the age of 60 years in the case of women or the age of 65 years in the case of men and move to the retirement pensioners, register;

(3) how many people are taken off the unemployment register each month because they leave the United Kingdom to live abroad.

A number of adult students seeking vacation work only, do register as unemployed. Although their numbers are recorded and published, they are not included in the main totals of the unemployed.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people leave the unemployment register each month in order to take up offers on the Government-sponsored youth opportunities programme and other related Government-backed programmes for youth.

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that an average of about 28,000 young people entered the youth opportunities programme (YOP) each month between 1 April 1980 and 30 November 1980.

Community Industry (CI), which operates through a grant to the National Association of Youth Clubs had an average of approximately 750 entrants each month between 1 April 1930 and 30 November 1980.
