asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many apprenticeships were supported by Government funding for each year since 1976.

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that the relevant figures for each year are as follows:

1975–76–24,889; 1976–77–37,935; 1977–-78–33,414; 1978–79–37,225; 1979–80–20,703.
