Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Minister for the Civil Service (1) how many civil servants are employed within the Greater Manchester metropolitan area;

(2) if he will list the Government Departments and the number of civil servants in each Department with offices in the Greater Manchester Metropolitan Area.

Mr. Hayhoe:

There were 18,000 non-industrial civil servants in post in the Greater Manchester metropolitan county on 1 October 1980. The Departmental breakdown is given below:
