HC Deb 12 January 1981 vol 996 c433W
Mr. Mark Hughes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the latest estimated number of calves group-housed in straw pens; what is the latest estimated number of calves used for veal production; what was the total one year earlier; and how many units are estimated to be producing veal by (a) group-housed and (b) individual-penned systems.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

It is provisionally estimated that, in the first 11 months of 1980, some 127,000 calves in total were slaughtered in the United Kingdom compared with 132,000 for the corresponding period of 1979. I regret that the other information requested is not available.
