HC Deb 12 January 1981 vol 996 cc464-5W
Mr. Weetch

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what action has been taken following the reference by the Law Commission to the Registry of Friendly Sicieties of suggestions for changes in the disputes provisions of the Building Societies Act 1962.

Mr. Lawson

I am not aware that any suggestions have been made by the Law Commission for changes in the disputes provisions of the Building Societies Act 1962. What the hon. Member may have in mind is that in 1978 the Law Commission received a proposal for changes in those provisions from one member of the public, and passed the proposal to the Treasury for consideration in the context of amending legislation. I can assure the hon. Member that when the occasion arises the proposal will be considered in that context.

Mr. Weetch

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, according to the latest annual returns to the Registry of Friendly Societies, how many building society directors are known to be solicitors or professionally qualified surveyors.

Mr. Lawson

Building societies are not required to disclose the qualifications of their directors in the annual returns made by them to the Chief Registrar. the information requested cannot therefore be obtained from this source.

Mr. Weetch

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has received any representations, and from whom, concerning section 83 of the Building Societies Act 1962 (Annual Reports to Members).

Mr. Lawson

The Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies has received from the Building Societies Association a suggestion that the figure of £25 in section 83(1) should be increased to take account of the change in money values since that provision was first introduced.
