HC Deb 11 February 1981 vol 998 c340W
21. Mr. James Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what material effect the Government sponsored campaign on the sale of council houses has had on actual sales; and what was the cost of the campaign.

Mr. Rifkind

The impact of the campaign can be judged by the massive demand for the Department's leaflet on the right to buy which has been twice reprinted after an initial print of 250,000 copies. Many local authorities have made repeat orders and about 3,000 copies have been sent by my Department direct to individuals on request. It is too early to assess the number of resultant sales that have been completed, since even the earliest applications after the commencement of the Act will only now be reaching the stage where an offer to sell is made.

As regards the cost of this campaign, I refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Berwick and East Lothian (Mr. Home Robertson) on 3 November 1980.—[Vol. 991, c. 443.]
