§ 38. Mr. Lathamasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what progress he is making in reducing the staff of his Department so as to meet the Government's overall aim of cutting Civil Service numbers.
§ Mr. Mark CarlisleWhen we assumed office the authorised manpower level of my Department, including the University Grants Committee but excluding Arts and Libraries, was 2,706. The number of staff in post on 1 January 1981 was 2,538. It has already been announced that the Department's manpower target for 1 April 1984 is 2,190.
