HL Deb 02 February 1981 vol 416 cc1030-1WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government: Whether they will give, for each of the countries of the Indian subcontinent and Africa, an estimate of the number of people who will become British Overseas citizens as a result of the Nationality Bill; and in each case, how many of them will have a right of readmission to the United Kingdom under present immigration rules.

The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (Lord Carrington)

Estimates from our posts in the areas concerned of numbers of persons who would become British Overseas citizens are as follows:

Kenya 17,000
Tanzania 9,000
Zambia 5,000
Malawi 4,600
Zimbabwe 1,000
India 39,000
Pakistan 1,700
Sri Lanka 40
These figures include some wives and dependent children who may not be citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies and so would not become British Overseas citizens, but it is not possible to estimate their numbers.

There is no information about persons in other African countries and Bangladesh but numbers are not thought to be large. Nor is it possible to estimate how many persons who will become British Overseas citizens have the right of readmission to the United Kingdom under present immigration rules.
